Riverside & Sunny Downs Farms

Tirofruit is the majority shareholder of two large farming operations in the South Canterbury region of the South Island, New Zealand.

The farms have been owned since mid-2021.

The Sunny Downs dairy operation of 450 hectares, milks 1,600 cows for Fonterra supply. The Riverside Farm is a 950-hectare grazing block that winters the dairy cows and does beef farming, with a total of 4,200 head on the farm.

Across both farms, up to 15 people are employed, as well as contractors to sow crops and grass to feed the animals.

Farm Location

The farms are located near Kurow and in the Hakataramea Valley approximately one hour inland from the nearest central town – Oamaru.

Oamaru Port was where the very first shipload of frozen meat was exported from New Zealand to Europe in 1882.

Stunning Locations

The locations are stunning, being surrounded by hills often snow-covered in Winter. The area was a major travelling route for Māori over to the West Coast to collect greenstone,  and rock carvings can be seen nearby.

Both farms are supplied critical irrigation water over 15 centre pivots and fixed grid irrigators from the nearby irrigation schemes.
